The Chihuahua and the Saint Bernard are, oddly enough, members
of the same
species, Canis jamiliaris, sharing the same genetic blue-
print, anatomy, and fundamental drives. Over the years, however,
humans
have engineered amazing variations within this species, se-
lectively breeding animals that exhibit physical and behavioral
char-
acteristics most suitable for a variety of needs such as herding,
guarding, or running. The dog was and arguably
still is the most
manipulated animal on earth.
